Months after the cancellation of the drama series "The Following" season 4, the hope that fans once had seemed to evaporate. After a failed petition and no new home for the Kevin Bacon-led series, it's time to wave the white flag.
It is fairly normal for fans to push make sure that their favorite series returns another chapter, but sometimes, it doesn't always go their way. Soon after "The Following" season 4 was cancelled, fans immediately took online to gather signatures from co-fans to have the show renewed.
The petition called for 25k signatures for the renewal of "The Following" season 4 and while initially, the signatures doubled, tripled in a matter of days, it seemed like fans lost hope of ever seeing former FBI Agent Ryan Hardy, portrayed by Kevin Bacon, again. Signatures stopped coming in roughly over 50% of the goal, and news about shopping "The Following" season 4 around to online networks also ceased.
"This petition was created as a means to show Netflix, Hulu, ...etc that, despite the low-ratings, there is a passionate audience for this show and these characters, and we want want to see how the stories unfold," the petition read. "We 'Followers' aim to convince the producers to provide us with, at the very least, a Final Season."
Initially, it was thought the either Netflix or Hulu would swoop in and save the day, but weeks passed and no updates from the production or the people behind the online networks. A report by Hollywood News Daily revealed that producers were initially courting Netflix after "The Following" season 4 was cancelled, but that obviously didn't bring back the series.
Hulu was also asked, but the network didn't see "The Following" season 4 in their roster, according to a report by CrossMap.
Despite the cancellation, "The Following" season 4 was already drafted and ready for production. Previous reports revealed that should the series survive, season 4 would focus on taking down the "serial killer organization" while keeping the "death" of Ryan Hardy a status quo.
