For most people, Thanksgiving is the holiday to indulge in fatty foods and spend an overwhelming amount of time with family.

We often forget that it’s also the time to be grateful for all we have, possibly because it’s so difficult to get into this mind set.

Studies have previously shown that gratitude improves both physical and emotional health, relationships, self-esteem and lifespans, according to Forbes. Despite the benefits of gratitude, a new study shows that Thanksgiving 2015 may not be centered on being thankful.

Three in five Americans reportedly stated that they would rather do something different than reflect on what they’re thankful for on Thanksgiving. 71 percent of Americans reportedly stated that the holidays actually cause them stress due to shopping, spending time with family and cooking big holiday meals.

Gratitude is important, because it is actually natural for us, despite how difficult it is to be thankful.

“We are receptive beings, dependent on the help of others, on their gifts and their kindness. As such, we are called to gratitude,” University of California Davis psychologist and author Robert Emmons stated.

“If we choose to ignore this basic truth, we steer ourselves off course. Studying gratitude reminds us of this basic truth.”

For those having difficulty experiencing gratitude this Thanksgiving, it’s important to know that it’s not a completely impossible. Acknowledging your values, aiming to be your best, but not perfect, and saying one thing you’re grateful for every day are all ways to start practicing gratitude.

“It’s an easy, free thing that gives you back control over your own life,” Parade Magazine editor and author Janice Kaplan.

“It doesn’t make the bad stuff go away, but it allows you to say that no matter what happens, I can see the positive in it.”
