The scenes that will be shown here were filmed in the city of Almeria, Spain.
The new location was required in order to continue where the story left off for Ethan Chandler, as played by Josh Hartnett. Ethan had admitted to the Scotland authorities that he was responsible for killing people at the Mariner's Inn when he turned into a werewolf. Due to his actions, he was sent back to America.

According to Christian Post, a new villain will be coming back into the series as executive producer John Logan hinted the new character.
"I can tell you this and this is such a tease," he said. "And I am sorry for it — but after two years I am finally adding another famous literary character."
"I think Hecate is such a delicious character because she has her mother's sort of flamboyant sense of evil and flamboyant sense of language, but she's a contemporary young woman who's not as bound as her mother to the old tropes of Satanism."
"Penny Dreadful" season 3 will premiere on May 1, 2016, at the usual 10 p.m. EST timeslot on Showtime.
