Should I get my wisdom teeth removed?

Each year around 5 million people get their wisdom teeth removed, but many aren't sure if it is necessary. The truth is that sometimes it is not necessary to remove your wisdom teeth.

Continue reading this article, and we will talk more about wisdom teeth, when to remove them and when you can keep them.

When It's a Go for the Tooth Removal

There are some cases that make it a no-brainer to take these teeth out of your mouth. For instance, if your wisdom teeth aren't growing in properly and are pushing against your other teeth -- you want to get them out.

Some of the other instances when it might be a good idea to take those teeth out are:

  • When your mouth isn't big enough

  • When you have cavities or gum disease

  • When they're impacted

If any of those things are the case, you definitely want to get those wisdom teeth removed as soon as you can. Most of the time, your dentist should refer you to an oral surgeon. In some cases, they will take care of the procedure at their office.

Before Removal

Before getting the teeth taken care of, you'll meet with the oral surgeon and talk about what is going to happen. If you have any health problems, this is the time to share that information. You should also tell them about any drugs you take on a regular basis.

During and After Removal

Everything should only take around 45 minutes or less to complete. You'll either be numbed around the spot that is being worked on, be sedated, or undergo general anesthesia.

Since the doctor may have to cut your gum or bone to get the tooth out, they will sew the gums shut. You may also get gauze pads for your mouth to soak up any blood.

After the procedure, when you're at home, you can put an ice pack on your face to keep it from swelling, and you can use moist heat for a sore jaw. Make sure you open and close your jaw, so it doesn't get stuck shut.

You'll want to eat foods like pasta, rice, or soup when you're recovering.
