Trader Joe is recalling packages of their raw walnuts because of a possible Salmonella contamination, a type of bacteria that can cause illness and fatal complications in children, the elderly, and those who have weak immune systems, the United States Food and Drug Administration announced to the public on Tuesday.

The recall includes bags of Trader Joe's walnut pieces, halves, and baking pieces which were distributed nationwide. The potential contamination was traced back to a routine testing of their products and factory by an outside company contracted by the FDA.

However, so far, there were no complaints of any health-related issues after intake of the said walnuts. This recall was done out of precaution to prevent such diseases to emerge in the future.

For those who have purchased the affected products, they can visit Trader Joe's website to get their full refund.

Salmonella can be harmless to those who are healthy during the time of infection, but a lot more dangerous to people with weak immune systems. Affected individuals may suffer from nausea, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and worse, blood infection or sepsis.

According to Mayo Clinic, in some cases, the diarrhea associated with salmonella infection can be so dehydrating as to require prompt medical attention. In addition, other life-threatening complications may also develop if the infection spreads beyond the intestines. Your risk of acquiring salmonella infection is higher if you travel to countries with poor sanitation.

This has been a bad month for many food product companies. Recently, Yahoo News reported that the Kraft Foods Group recalled millions of boxes of Macaroni and Cheese Dinner due to possible metal pieces in the boxes. Also, Blue Bell Creameries have recalled some of their ice cream products due to Listeria risk.
