Health Tip: 7 Ways to Improve Memory Skills

The brain's main function involves a lot of processes which makes people think, imagine, and do ordinary tasks. One of the most important functions of the brain is memorization which enables people to reminisce events, people, and places. Also, recall happenings and events that happened in our lives. Memory management is fundamental for students who wants to study for an examination, an employee beating a deadline for a report, and adult who wants to preserve the sharpness of his mind in order for him to perform his daily activities with ease.  Here are seven ways to help enhance memory skills.

1.       Perform Exercise and Stay Physically Fit - The brain needs as much oxygen as the rest of the body. Exercise enhances the circulation of the blood throughout the body especially to the brain. The brain is like the other parts of the body, it needs nourishment and oxygen in order to perform its processes. If you are physically fit, you will have brainpower and alertness to think and perform tasks.

2.       Have adequate sleep and rest - The brain is just like the muscles of the body which are working all day and all night long. Even if we are asleep, it still does most of its function like the mere breathing we do.  However, it gets tired too and sleep is its only means for it to recharge itself and have a rest.  Yet, even though we are sleeping, the brain is still working by compressing and processing recent information and data. It also regulates bodily processes.

3.       Eat healthy - Food is where we acquire nutrients which are essential in brain function.  There are many foods that are rich with nutrients which can help enhance memory like blueberries which are rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants are helpful in preventing oxidative stress and it helps prevent a degenerative disease like Alzheimer's which is characterized by gradual loss of memory and brain function. Salmon is rich in Omega 3 essential fatty acid which is important in brain function for it includes docosahexaenoic acid or DHA. Also, nuts are good sources of Vitamin E and Omega 3 which is also important in maintaining memory. Furthermore, avocado is a monosaturated fat which helps in promoting good blood flow to the brain. Beets are abundant in natural nitrates that help increase circulation of blood to the brain that can help promote and enhance mental performance.

4.       Use it or you will lose it -  The muscles in the body should be used for it to enhance its performance but if you will not use them, it will lead to atrophy. Same is true with the brain, if the brain's abilities are maximized and used, it will eventually lead to loss of function. There are many ways on how to enhance the brain's capability, one way is to use your senses often by looking at visually attractive photos, smelling fragrant flowers, or listen to good music. The more sense used at a time, the more it enhances memory retention.

5.       Engage in brain exercises - The common notion about exercise is that it only pertains to the muscles and the bones of the body. Additionally, it also can be used to enhance memory management. It will make the brain work harder and maximize its potential. This can be done through doing puzzles, chess, scrabble, reading, playing cards, mind games and even Sudoku.

6.       Improve your emotional health and eradicate stress- When someone is stressed, his brain function is altered and affected. In order to manage stress, relaxation techniques can be done through doing meditation, deep breathing exercise and guided imagery. When someone has a high emotional health, they are happy and contented which aids in reaching their goals and achieving success. They also have the flexibility and litheness to manage stress and acquire high self-esteem.

7.       Take brain supplements - Nowadays, there many supplements that are good for the brain which are available in the market. Gingko Biloba is the most famous brain supplement available which is used as a memory enhancer. It is abundant with antioxidants that promotes in the development of brain structure and protects the neurons from free radicals. Another famous herb is the Ginseng which basically improve memory retention.
