The highly-anticipated spin-off for Spider-Man's villains "Sinister Six" is a much needed reboot especially with the various origin stories for the hero.
"Spider-Man is becoming more and more like Spawn every few years - all anyone sees of him isn't much beyond the origin story... Origin stories are fun, but how many times can we see it done? Studios must be sick of rehashing Spidey by now, but they continually have to," Matthew Surprenant of Movie Pilot wrote.
Surprenant commented on how Spider-Man has been portrayed through the years. Tobey Maguire's Spidey was definitely about his origins and Green Goblin alone. The second installment of the series, which focused on relationship drama and Doctor Octopus, garnered almost $784 million on profit. However, when the third "Spider-Man" part came, it was obvious that the series was losing people.
One of the things that possibly resulted to a rushed and half-bake series was cramming a lot of villains in one Spidey film. It was, most likely, a studio decision to toss in fan favorites in order to draw people to theaters. A "Sinister Six" film would be the best course of action for that.
"Kevin Feige and the Marvel team will be producing the new series at Sony in what is envisioned as a three part series to come out over consecutive summers... Sony will faze out all the Spidey Verse films they were developing... and focus on a story involving Spidey versus the Sinister Six... The first film will involve the Sinister Six coming together with the thought to later maybe spin them off," a source said.
Movie Pilot reported that Harry Osborn, who is one of the versions of the Green Goblin, will be responsible for gathering the Sinister Six. Adrian Toomes, also known as The Vulture, and Dr. Otto Octavius, also known as Dr. Octopus, are possible villains who will be included in the "Sinister Six." Furthermore, Norman Osborn, the original Green Goblin, might still be alive and is expected to return along with The Gentlemen.
