Nuts are known for being very healthy for one’s body.
A new study suggests that nuts may be even more powerful than we think.
Researchers at Maastricht University found that eating half a handful of nuts every day could lower the chance of death by 23 percent, according to BBC News. The study was reportedly done over the course of 10 years with participants eating at least 10g of nuts or peanuts a day.
“It was remarkable that substantially lower mortality was already observed at consumption levels of 15 teams of nuts or peanuts on average per day,” stated study author Professor Piet van den Brandt, according to Forbes.
For the study, researchers looked at data from over 120,000 Dutch people who have been taking part in the Netherlands Cohort Study since 1986, according to Forbes. Tree nuts, peanuts and peanut butter were reportedly a part of the analysis.
In the past, there had primarily been links between nuts and cardiovascular disease. The recent study has reportedly found that the benefits of nuts extends to other diseases, including cancer, stroke, diabetes, respiratory and neurodegenerative diseases.
Sadly, the recent study reportedly found that peanut butter didn’t have the same health effects as the other nuts included in the research.
Eating more nuts than the recommended amount reportedly didn’t help either.
“A higher intake was not associated with further reduction in mortality risk. This was also supported by a meta-analysis of previously published studies together with the Netherlands Cohort Study, in which cancer and respiratory mortality showed this same dose-response pattern,” explained Brandt.
