More people want white teeth, thanks to the growing obsession to celebrities whose pearly whites adorn glossy magazines and entertainment websites. Although you can always go to your dentist and request for teeth bleaching, you can also maintain the so-called white teeth diet for a more long-lasting effect.
As reported in the Daily Mail UK on Thursday, October 30, Anthony Zybutz, who is also a resident dentist for Botched Up Bodies, shares certain types of food and drink that you can consume in order to maintain or have whiter teeth.
He mentioned fruits and vegetables, especially those that are crunchy and thus require multiple chewing as the activity can already be likened to brushing one's teeth. In other words, these types of food can already clean your teeth while you're eating them. Great examples include broccoli, apple, and green beans.
He also recommends hard cheese to remove food particles stuck on teeth, which may later cause the buildup of bacteria.
Strawberries are also great for teeth whitening since they contain an enzyme known as malic acid, which boosts the production of saliva naturally. Saliva, on the other hand, acts as your very own mouth rinse. If you can't get hold of strawberries, you can add citrus ones such as limes, oranges, and lemons to your diet. The effect is similar.
Regardless of what you eat, it's best if you can complement every meal with water. Not only does it have zero calories, but it also naturally cleanses your mouth especially from food such as coffee that can cause teeth staining.
One of the best oral health defenses that you can do is to improve the condition of your gums and prevent its decay. The dentist suggests eating vegetables that contain a significant amount of fiber like broccoli and pineapple, because of its anti-inflammatory compound.
