After drinking too much alcohol, the next morning is an event most people hate. Hang overs include a wide array symptoms such as excruciating headache, weakness, dizziness and vomiting. It is the kind of feeling that would make you sleep the whole day. Drinking a lot of water after a night of heavy drinking would not improve the symptoms of hang over the next day, researchers say.
A new study by Dutch researchers discovered that the only way to prevent hangover is to drink less alcohol. They landed to their findings after analyzing data from around 800 students whom they asked about their steps to prevent hangover symptoms. However, no food or water showed positive effects, reports BBC News.
The study was presented at the European College of Neuropharmacology (ECNP) conference in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. According to the findings, no one is immune to hangovers.
"Throughout the world, the economic and social costs of alcohol abuse run into hundreds of billions of euros per year. It's therefore very important to answer simple questions like 'how do you avoid a hangover?," European College of Neuropharmacology (ECNP) conference in Amsterdam in the Netherlands said in the study.
Medical News Today reports that around 25% to 30% of drinkers claim that they do not experience any hangover. If they do not experience it, they may be more likely to continue drinking. However, based on the survey from the students from Canada and Netherlands, 79% do not experience hangover but those are the ones who tend to drink lesser than those who actually experience hangovers.
They also assessed the common notion that drinking water after a drinking session would prevent hangovers the next morning. After asking the students, 449 of the students or 54.4% reported eating or drinking after consuming alcohol. Though those who ate or drank reported a slight improvement than those who did not, it does not mean it could actually prevent hangovers.
Dr. Bloomfield reiterated that people may think that drinking water after alcohol consumption can prevent hangover because alcohol causes dehydration. Water can treat dehydration. However, he added, "Likewise, drinking alcohol on an empty stomach causes a rapid increase in alcohol levels in the blood. However, as many can testify, even a hearty meal and drinking lots of water won't fend off a hangover when people drink 'one too many,' given that alcohol has other effects on the body too."
