"Jurassic World 2" easily became a sure deal, especially after its first film earned $1.6 billion in the global box office and $651 million domestically.
The film brought with it a nostalgic appeal - as it was stuck in development for a decade - combined with this generation's high tech movie effects.
With a scheduled release date of July 2018, "Jurassic World 2" film makers are already hard at work at coming up with a new, interesting plot. The production team will certainly need a lot of time, considering that they want to venture out from the usual dinosaur-centric them park setting.
Considering that there will be a lot of changes between the original films and this upcoming 2018 sequel, director Colin Trevorrow has pointed out that there is also the possibility that the franchise's original stars will not return. This remains unconfirmed to date, but Trevorrow has pointed out that they will be implementing an overhaul in order to appeal to an entirely new audience.
"I never saw a draft in which they were included," Trevorrow told Movie Pilot. "I think I looked at every iteration at least once. That was because Steven Spielberg had a mission to make something new! He really wanted it to be a 'Jurassic Park' for a new generation!"
"Jurassic World" film makers were able to establish the movie as a standalone project. That said, the sequel could be the perfect solution to tie back to the rest of the movies that are part of the franchise in order to establish continuity.
Bryce Dallas Howard, for one, is open to the idea of the original cast returning to the set. "I could see versions of the film where a lot of the characters come back," she said. "Just as a fan of the franchise, I would be totally stoked on that! I get, like, any person who was a fan of the first film. I get such a rush at the possibility of characters coming back!"
