In a hidden corner at Microsoft's flagship store in New York City, developers are invited to take part in demos for the HoloLens augmented reality (AR) headset.

Normally closed off from the public, the tech giant is giving a select group of developers access to a secret space in their NYC store to try out HoloLens for themselves.

Popular Science managed to visit the secret room ahead of the developer preview.

Reportedly, developers will be greeted by three demos: the mixed reality video game "Project X-Ray," a 3D modelling software called "HoloStudio" and "Storytelling."

As the website pointed out, "Project X-Ray" was first seen during a Microsoft event last year where players are pitted against holographic opponents coming from all sides.

"The game is a particularly impactful part of the experience because it shows [off] the processing power of the HoloLens."

On the other hand, "HoloStudio" is designed to demo the augmented reality headset's basic controls via gestures, head movement and voice control for product designers.

Popular Science compared it with MS Paint for Windows although "its purpose is to inspire people to create 3D objects using holograms."

Lastly, "Storytelling" "is an exploration of the types of storytelling in mixed reality."

The demos aren't quite as in-depth though as "there's no time to explore more than the most basic elements of each app," according to The Verge.

After experiencing the HoloLens demos for themselves, Microsoft wants developers to have an idea on how to build their own AR software.

Interested developers should head to the HoloLens Events page to book a demo. According to SlashGear, applications for a development kit - the first batch of which are due out Q1 2016 - are still open.

On the other hand, those who aren't developers can pitch their AR app ideas to Microsoft via the Share Your Idea page.
