U2’s Bono May Postpone World Tour, Undergoes Extensive Surgery For Multiple Fractures After New York City Bike Accident

Bono, 54, was involved in a bike accident in New York City when he avoided another cyclist. The U2 frontman suffered from multiple fractures in his his left eye socket and broke his left shoulder blade in three places. He also suffered a left elbow fracture that left the bone in six pieces. He underwent reconstructive surgery for five hours on Sunday which included three metal plates and 18 screws needed to repair the damage.

The band can postpone their world tour since according to doctors; it will take months before Bono can eventually recover. The singer underwent a five-hour operation at the New York- Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Centre and Hospital for Special Surgery. After a day, he underwent another surgery to repair a fracture to the little finger on his left hand.

Orthopaedic trauma surgeon Dr. Dean Lorich confirmed that it will take longer for the singer to recover and bring back his activities to normal. Furthermore, extensive and progressive therapy is needed for him. Bono has injured his arm in a cycling spill in Central Park and requires some surgery to repair it. The full statement from Dr. Dean Lorich states, "On November 16th, Bono was involved in a high energy bicycle accident when he attempted to avoid another rider. Presented as a Trauma Alert to New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell's Emergency Department, his Trauma Work-up at that time included multiple X-rays and CAT scans showed injuries that include: Left facial fracture involving the orbit of his eye, Left scapula (shoulder blade) fracture in three separate pieces, Left compound distal humerus fracture where the bone of his humerus was driven though his skin and the bone was in six different pieces.

He was taken emergently to the operating room for a five-hour surgery Sunday evening where the elbow was washed out and debrided, a nerve trapped in the break was moved and the bone was repaired with three metal plates and 18 screws, one day later, he had surgery to his left hand to repair a fracture of his 5th metacarpal. He will require intensive and progressive therapy, however a full recovery is expected.
