Since Neil Armstrong landed on the moon more than four decades ago, a few astronauts have returned to the planet's nearest neighbour and have discovered new information about the satellite. In 2014, China has made a significant stride in taking part in the moon race after having successfully flown the Chang'e 5 T1 spacecraft near the celestial body. Recently, scientists from the Asian country announced that they are planning to return to the moon and explore a part of the satellite that man has yet to be step foot in.

In a report sent out by China's state-funded media outlet, it was confirmed that country is planning to land the Change-4 probe on the dark side of the moon in 2018. Should it be successful, the landing would be the first time a spacecraft has been to the Earth's neighbour.

The dark or far side of the moon is an area that is perpetually locked facing the earth. It is said to be widely different than the area visible from the planet since it is heavily battered and contain bigger and more densely packed craters.

"The Chang'e-4's lander and rover will make a soft landing on the back side of the moon, and will carry out in-place and patrolling surveys" quipped Liu Jizhong, China's lunar exploration chief.

Scientists from NASA were shocked by the announcement. Admittedly, the U.S. space exploration arms was quote off guard following the news. However Clive Neal, chair of Lunar Exploration Analysis Group, has since explained how much of a big deal China's upcoming voyage is. According to Neal, the elusive side of the satellite is leaps and bound different from the side perpetually facing the planet. Neal has only the most excited words for China's initiative.

"I am sure the international lunar science community will be very excited about this mission. I know I am" gushed Neal.
