Living a healthy lifestyle entails more than just staying fit, eating right, and getting the right amount of sleep. "Healthy" goes beyond the confines of taking care of oneself; it also involves taking care of your surroundings, particularly your home.

The kitchen, everyone's favorite room in the house, is a crucial place where all kinds of bacteria and viruses can lurk. To keep the kitchen clean, here are some timeless kitchen cleaning tips that have stood the test of time.

1. Keep a Spic and Span Refrigerator. Remove stains and clean the inside door, shelves, and cabinets of your refrigerator by using a soft cloth dampened with 1 quart warm water and 2 tablespoons baking soda. Tight spots and little nook and crannies can be cleaned with cotton buds.

2. Clean Up Cabinets. Cabinets don't get the proper cleaning they need; after all, this is where we store our utensils and other kitchen ware, so it better be spotless. To clean the insides of a cabinet, use a vacuum cleaner with a detachable nozzle to say goodbye to debris and dust. An old plastic card can do the trick in scraping down tough spots.

3. Care for the Countertop. The key to maintaining a clean countertop is to clean as you go. Avoid leaving dirty dishes that pile up, peels that leave stains, or debris that attract ants.  Great way to clean the counter minus the harmful chemicals is by spraying vinegar and wiping dry.

4. Maintain the Microwave. Microwaves do a lot of work, and they deserve proper maintenance and care. To avoid a dirty microwave, simply place a mug with water and a slice of lemon in the microwave, heat for a maximum of 3 minutes, and let it sit. The steam will work on softening the stains, and the lemon deodorize.
