During the final episode of last year, Arya Stark lost her eyesight as punishment when she still could not shed off her thirst for revenge. Now spoilers for "Game of Thrones" season 6 reveal that her blindness will continue in future episodes.
In an interview with Vulture, Maisie Williams confirmed the spoilers about her wearing the contact lenses that made her eyes appear cloudy while filming new episodes for "Game of Thrones" season 6.
"I was so confident at the end of the last [season], like, Oh, [wearing them] was fine, I can't wait, but it's been actually a bit of a task," she revealed.
Williams added, "They're very painful, they're like huge and they're very thick."
Nevertheless, she realized that putting them on, even if she couldn't see anything, was necessary for her to do her character.
"Pretending to be blind is much easier when you actually can't see anything," she explained. "So I did actually love them. For close-ups and stuff it was great. But for wide shots I was like, 'Can we take them out? Is that okay?'"
In fact, she shared on an Instagram post five months ago just how difficult it was to wear the contacts when she had to put cold jelly on her eyebags to ease the discomfort.
According to the books by George R.R. Martin, Arya Stark will eventually regain her eyesight. However, the circumstances are different since Arya got blind as part of her training as a Faceless Man.
In the HBO series, her eyesight was take from her out of punishment.
"In A Dance with Dragons, her sight is restored and she gets her first hit, to kill the corrupt insurance broker on the docks, which she successfully completes," iDigital Times said. "At the same time she has also been doing her personal hits, killing Raff the Sweetling by seducing him and luring him away."
But "Game of Thrones" is not afraid to veer away from the source material, so it's not known if Arya Stark will stay blind all throughout season 6, and the initial spoilers are silent on the issue.
