As rumors of a Microsoft Surface phone being in the works increase, whispers of the device being a Windows 10 Mobile saver is also becoming louder.

Microsoft might be eventually forced to close their Lumia line, so it is expected that the prototype Surface phone might help in pushing increased revenues.

PC World reported that last Thursday, Microsoft unveiled that Lumia sales had decreased to less than half of what they were exactly a year ago. This happened during a quarter when the company launched two flagship phones and a new operating system, the Windows 10 Mobile.

Accordingly, Microsoft said that they sold 4.5 million Lumia phones during the fourth calendar quarter, decreasing a huge 57 percent as compare to the 10.5 million sold during the same time, one year ago. Generally, Microsoft's phone revenue declined 53 percent or $1.2 billion.

Reportedly, Amy Hood, Microsoft's chief financial officer, told analysts to expect that the company's phone revenue will decline a similar amount in the next quarter as well.

According to Digital Trends, a Microsoft job listing spiked a major change to Windows 10 Mobile. And that if correctly done, could save the OS from being obsolete.

This job listing could possibly allow smartphones to have desktop-class x86 applications, which is quite impossible at the current time.

With the release of the Surface Pro, fans are also rooting to have a Microsoft Surface phone. They were "eager for something more akin to the Windows desktop platform than what Windows Phone actually had to offer."

Apparently, Microsoft might really have something planned. In December, Microsoft's Chief Marketing Officer Chris Capossela dished on the company's setbacks.

"We need more breakthrough work," he said. "With Surface, we had a bunch of early misfires, but that notion of a tablet that could replace your laptop."

According to Express, the Microsoft Surface phone is expected to go alongside the next update to Windows 10 Mobile, called Redstone.

The Microsoft Surface Phone is pegged to be a flagship device with a physical design similar to the Surface Book and Pro 4 tablet.
