Since the American Football, or infamously known as Superbowl, is an enormous event highly-anticipated not just by the United States of America itself but across the whole world, numerous advertisements come from time to time, in between breaks, or as long as the show permits such.
Companies from a different line of products utilize the opportunity of promoting in big audiences, and to make it more effective, commercial twists and gimmicks are often added to draw attention and increase publicity.
In a report by Hello Giggles, it seemed that the Doritos advertisement didn't fail to catch the attention of viewers as it drew several mixed reactions from the public.
According to the report, The ad started with a pregnant woman having her ultrasound. Beside her is her husband eating a Doritos snack. It was shown in the commercial that the unborn child cannot resist the Dorito but the mother who noticed what was happening inside her womb threw the Dorito chip away which caused the unborn baby get out of her womb.
Some thought of it as hilarious, that they got the whole point of sarcasm and comedy in the commercial. Several tweets were taken like Dwayne Johnson's:
"That Doritos baby ultrasound commercial could win best commercial of #SB50."
Another user with username @mackmaine tweeted:
"That Doritos commercial was hilarious!!!! #SB50"
And it was also the same thing for user @GoT_Tyrion:
"That @Doritos commercial is the real MVP #SB50"
But others described it as gross and was even traumatized. User @rachelskylar said:
"Slightly traumatized by the gross Doritos ad. #SB50"
Twitter user @mindykaling also aired her side:
"That Doritos commercial was chilling."
And because the ad somewhat gave an impression of abortion, others seemed to view it as inappropriate for a commercial. User @danielsloss tweeted:
"'He's eating Doritos. One abortion please.'
That advert, with no sound on. #SB50"
John Mackey with user ID @Ostimusic even said:
"So if I understand that ad correctly, @Doritoscause abortions."
Aside from others viewing it as abortion, there were also a few who view it in a political sense like Twitter user @NARAL:
"#NotBuyingIt - that @Doritos ad using #antichoice tactic of humanizing fetuses & sexist tropes of dads as clueless & moms as uptight. #SB50"
With these mixed reactions, we can still probably say that Doritos nailed their goal--they gained publicity, too much of it actually, either good or bad.
