With "Castle" season 8 being in jeopardy, fans are fearing that season 9 will suffer the same fate.

Several speculations about the show's cancellation and renewal have started to surface online.  Apart from that, there have been talks about a "Castle" spin-off.  What will be the show's future?

ABC president Peter Lee gave a glimpse of the series' fate at the Television Critics Association.  While many worry for the upcoming run, Lee gave a very optimistic answer about "Castle."

"We'd love Castle to keep going for many years to come," he said as reported by TV Line. "There are a lot of conversations going on as to how we could do that."

"I don't want to give a glimpse to what those ideas might be," he added, "but I'm feeling optimistic that we've got some good ideas."

Speculations are heavy online that "Castle" season 9 could possibly not see the light of day.  However, rumors are also circulating that execs could just go with producing a spin-off or new episodes without Nathan Fillion.

Despite being loved by so many, fans have also expressed their dismay about the show's character development and plot.  At the height of season 8 being cancelled, some fans have even claimed that the show was already "past its prime."

"I was a rabid 'Castle' fan, but the past season lost me," one fan commented on an Entertainment Weekly article. "It just became another crime 'dramedy.'"

"It makes me sad because I love Nathan Fillion, but the show is really past its prime, imo, and even he can't save it. Before I get attacked, I know there are different opinions and some still love it. You're welcome to your own thoughts on it.. I just don't enjoy it any more. The spark has gone out and I'm pretty sure there'll be no reconciliation, at least on my side."
