With the new "Jason Bourne" trailer debuting in the recent NFL Superbowl, fans have started to wonder what would happen to Jeremy Renner's Bourne film storyline.

As cinemablend.com reported, with Damon returning as the beloved superspy, there may be no more room for "The Bourne Legacy" star Jeremy Renner's spinoff.

However, according to slashfilm.com, producer Frank Marshall clarified the future of the projects. "They're still two different projects, two different films," Marshall said. When the sequel to "The Bourne Legacy" was postponed, director Justin Lin decided to go with the 3rd "Star Trek" film first.

Matt Damon reprising his role has many speculating a connection of Renner's Aaron Cross and Damon's Bourne in a future film. The star of "The Martian" did an interview with Entertainment Weekly and spoke about returning as the famous assassin.

"First and foremost, we needed a good story to tell," Damon shared. "Everyone involved at the studio level really wanted it to happen, but none of us wanted to force it. And so [Bourne Ultimatum director] Paul [Greengrass] and I, if there was any strategy we could hit upon, it was to wait to see how the world change, or to see if anything presented itself organically."

"Mainly, we just didn't want to mess it up. We were really happy with the three films and if we were going to do another one, we wanted it to fit in with the three films in terms of quality."

Damon then clarified that this could be the end of the "Jason Bourne" series.

"This is the completion of this journey that started in the 'Bourne Identity,'" he said. "It's part of the first three [movies], it's not a whole new chapter. It feels like the conclusion, even though we're not saying it's the conclusion, it feels like the conclusion of my identity journey. It goes deeper than 'Ultimatum,' basically."
