Good news for "Destiny" fans, Activision Blizzard has confirmed that a sequel to the popular online sci-fi shooter game is currently in works and there's also a "large new expansion" coming this year.

The sequel to "Destiny" has been scheduled to get released sometime in 2017.

"Activision Publishing, along with its partners at Bungie, expects to bring a large new expansion to Destiny in 2016 and to release a full game sequel in 2017," Activision Blizzard revealed while announcing the company's fourth quarter and 2015 financial results, reported Venture Beat.

David Dague, Bungie's community manager, also mentioned about the sequel in the company's weekly "Destiny" blog post.

"Prior to the holiday break we mentioned a second, larger update slated for Spring,´ Dague noted, reported iDigital Times.

"That content release will feature a significant Light increase, a bunch of new gear to earn and equip, and new challenges for PvE players seeking some more fun experiences and replayability."

"Beyond that, the team is focused on delivering a large expansion later this year, and a full 'Destiny' sequel in 2017."

Activision Blizzard also stated that the online shooter game has attracted over 25 million players, who have logged over 3 billion hours in total.

Last month, it was reported that Destiny's sequel has been delayed from 2016 to 2017.

"We'll be plotting more specific waypoints as time goes on. Right now, there are hundreds of passionate people at Bungie working to turn the plan for Destiny's future into the adventures, dangerous enemies, and glittering treasures that await us," Bungie.net's "This Week at Bungie" update read, reported IGN.

"As soon as we're ready, we'll share the details with you in all the usual places. In the meantime, we'll keep the conversation rolling with the team on the support front. We're also gathering up details for spring as the team begins to lock it in."

Unfortunately, there are currently no details on how the sequel might look like.
