Conor McGregor's fight on March 5 against Rafael Dos Anjos is one for the history books not only for UFC but also for MMA in general.
Conor will vie to become the first fighter in UFC history to hold two belts in two different weight divisions at the same time. But before he could do that, he still has to face a formidable fighter and current lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos.
Latest reports could spell some challenge for Conor McGregor. Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com twitted that the lightweight champion and his manager requested to have Herb Dean as the referee for the fight. The request was granted according to the tweet.
MMA Mania also confirmed the tweet by revealing the judges and referee assignments for the upcoming fight. John McCarthy will be the third man in the octagon for Holm's Bantamweight title defense against Meisha Tate.
The reason why Dos Anjos' camp requested Dean has solicited some opinions on the possible reason.
According to joe.co.uk, "Some suggest that his tendency to let fights play out on the ground as opposed to standing them up may be the reason why, which was evident in the second round of the McGregor v Mendes, where the American dominated from the top position."
BJPenn.com also echoes the opinion by stating, "Ahead of the fight it has been revealed that dos Anjos and his manager requested that Herb Dean referee the fight. Many believe that this is because Dean has a tendency to not stand fighters up when it comes to grappling exchanges."
The saga leading to the fight between two powerful warriors in the octagon clearly continues with this curious request by the lightweight champ's camp. There's no word yet from Conor's camp or his usually busy twitter account with regards to the latest update on the referee selection for the highly anticipated battle.
