Teen Birth Rate In Massachusetts At Historic Low: What's The Reasoning?

Massachusetts Department for Public Health released a report on Friday concerning the fact that the rate of conceiving babies with adolescents is very low. To be more precise according to this report only 12 out of 1000 mothers are 15 years old.

This is terrific news for all Massachusetts families, and a dramatic indication that our decisions to invest in our young people through education, support and resources can have a real and lasting impact on their lives and in their communities," Gov. Deval Patrick said in a statement.

According to the report, there were 2,732 babies born to teen mothers between 15 and 19 years old in 2013, down from 3,219 the previous year. The number of children born to teen mothers in that age bracket is significantly lower than the 7,258 births reported in 1990.

Back in 2012 the birth rate with Hispanics who are around 16 years old was 13 deliveries per 1000 mothers. This new report has shown that this rate has dropped a bit in the 2014 and now it stands on 11 deliveries in a 1000 mothers. Considering the fact that back in 1990 the rate was way higher (35.3 in 1000) this is a record low rate.

The rate of deliveries was three times higher with Hispanics as compared to white people but still if we look at the records from 10 years ago we can see that the rates with both sides used to be very high and are now dropping continuously.

The adolescent birth rate in the US is going down year after year and teen pregnancy is also dropping, reaching record low rates this May.

Back in 2010 The Guttmacher Institute showed that around 57.4 young mothers out of a 1000 were pregnant. Comparing this to 1990 the rates of young mothers carrying children has dropped an amazing 51%.

There are few reasons why this decline started appearing and most of us will have to agree that it was due to improved access to healthcare provided by the state officials. Also commercials about safe sex spread all across the mediums have helped in reducing the rates.

The Governor Deval Patrick raised his voice about the reports and said that he is very happy that the way they governed the country reached the young public and are now more careful during intercourse, resulting in the low rates of teen mothers.
