In late October and November, there were reports in Minnesota wherein four people became ill after consuming pre-packed, commercially produced caramel apples. The victims were all adults from 59 to 90 years old. Out of the victims, two succumbed to complications of the disease.
As a result, health officials released a warning to the public who happen to have purchased any pre-packed caramel apples which include other toppings such as nuts, chocolates and sprinkles. They announced the public not to consume them until a thorough investigation has been done and until more information becomes available.
Most caramel apples in Minnesota were purchased from stores such as Cub Foods, Kwik Trip and Mike's Discount Foods. The brands of caramel apples namely Carnival and Kithen Cravings are no longer available for purchase and were recalled by the companies. The main concern of health officials are for those who have purchased these caramel apples and may have them at home.
They are also warning that other brands may have the same effect on the health of consumers. Hence, they are recommending individuals not to consume these apples in the mean time. However, no cases were reported regarding the consumption of apples which are not caramel-coated.
On average, seven cases of listeriosis are reported in Minnesota every year but this one was considered an outbreak because it entailed two deaths and four cases in a matter of weeks.
Listeriosis is a bacterial infection most commonly caused by Listeria monocytogenes. This infection is a foodborne bacterial illness that can be very serious for pregnant women and people with impaired immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Pregnant women are warned from eating caramel apples because listeriosis can be fatal for both the mother and the unborn child.
All individuals who have these symptoms should contact their health care providers for prompt diagnosis and medical attention.
