CNN has hailed Demi Lovato as "warrior for mental wellness" for being able to win her battle against depression, bipolar disorder, anorexia, bulimia and problems with drug addiction. The Disney star faced eating disorders and addiction head on after reports of self harm and a recent diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
According to Celebrity Health News, she had been a victim of bullying since she was 8 years old. Thus, she started having eating disorders like bulimia. From her childhood through teen years, she had been suffering from various predicaments from anorexia, bulimia and depression. She came to a point when she starved herself until she was only 88 pounds.
By 2010, she entered rehab to seek for help for her various mental problems and eating problems. Now 22 years old, she is under treatment for bipolar disorder but still struggles with depression.
"I literally didn't know why they were being so mean to me and they would just say well you're fat. And then a few months later I developed an eating disorder," she said. She even admitted that by age 11 she started cutting herself.
She also battled with alcohol and drug abuse at an early age. She was addicted to alcohol, cocaine and marijuana. With everything mixed up, she started binging then purging until she realized that what she is doing is bad for her body.
"I started compulsively overeating. I would bake cookies and then eat the whole pan. I went to just starving myself, and that turned into throwing up and starving myself. I would throw up and it would just be blood. I realized if I don't stop this, I am going to die," Lovato recalled.
There came a point that she lost control of her emotions during a concert tour and struck one of her back up dancers, which is one of her closest friends. This caused her family and friends to come to her aid. She admitted herself into a woman's only addiction centre for treatment. There, she learned she had bipolar disorder.
Today, Demi is an image of a stronger woman. She had her scars on her wrists covered up with a tattoo saying, "Stay Strong". She is now in control of her life and has overcome her eating disorders while showing off her bikini body in her social media account.
