Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz have been separated for three years now. However, the truth about what really went wrong in their relationship is still pretty fresh for the Fall Out Boy rocker.
He recently opened up about their messy split, as well as their now-amicable co-parenting system, when he was interviewed by Howard Stern. Simpson and Wentz are parents to their very adorable six-year-old son, Bronx.
Wentz claims that his marriage with the 30-year-old Simpson started to dwindle when Fall Out Boy went on a hiatus back in 2010.
"At 31, we'd had all these great years as a band, and then we took time off, and I basically became Mr. Mom," Wentz shared. "I had the beard, the flannel shirt. I didn't know what my identity was. That factored in. when your identity is what you do, it's hard when you stop doing it."
"It was the first time where I was, like, 'Well, no one's really taking my picture. I'm just, basically, hanging out with my kid all day. Who cares?'" the 35-year-old musician added.
"I think when you stop caring about your personal appearance, your personal hygiene, it makes you even more depressed, but it makes you do it more. It's like a vicious cycle."
His personal troubles then continued as begrudgingly hosted a Jingle Ball event. He was upset that he was only asked to host the show, instead of perform, which was actually what he loved to do best. As a coping mechanism for his disappointment, he decided to drink a lot of beer.
"That night, I banged my head and ended up needing to get stitches," Wentz recalled. "All this stuff - that was not like myself at all - was part of this cycle of being bummed out."
Apart from his personal issues, Wentz also believes that their decision to tie the knot at such a young age was also to blame for the demise of their marriage. They married in May of 2008, when Wentz was 29 and Simpson was only 24.
