With "Pacific Rim 2" release date announced, is "Pacific Rim 3" already in development?
Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim 2" has been in development for quite some time now, and there have been numerous details of the production surfacing online. Latest news on the franchise reveals the next installment, "Pacific Rim 3" to already be on the planning stage?
In an interview with Collider, "Crimson Peak" director Guillermo del Toro reveals how excited he is with the "Pacific Rim" franchise. After directing the first "Pacific Rim" movie, he has gone forward to develop the sequel, and apparently has already "Pacific Rim 3" on his mind.
Talking about returning characters in "Pacific Rim 2" movie, Guillermo del Toro seems to have slipped a wee bit more detail on the franchise. He said, "some of your favorite characters come back, some others don't because we have decided that we're going to shoot ambitiously and say 'Let's hope we have three movies,' so some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one."
Although director Guillermo del Toro only shared a small hint on a possible "Pacific Rim 3" film, this has already sparked rumors about what possible plot could occur come the third installment.
Previous reports reveal that "Pacific Rim 2" is said to focus on the origins of the Kaijun as revealed by the film's screenwriter Zak Penn ("The Avengers" 2012), and that the timeline of "Pacific Rim 2" will be somewhat a few years later following the events of the first film.
Talking about "Pacific Rim 2" timeline, Guillermo del Toro said, "It's a few years after the first one. It's not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after - what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It's quite a jump."
"Pacific Rim 2" filming begins later this year, with a release date set for April 7, 2017.
