Okra, or "ladies' fingers", is rich in dietary fiber, vitamin C, folate, antioxidants, potassium, and calcium. Also known by its scientific name Abelmoschus esculentus, this widely known vegetable is delicious and boasts a unique taste suitable for various palates. It is often cooked boiled, baked, grilled, or added in soups, salads, and other recipes.

The health benefits of okra are endless. Here are some of them, compiled by The Weekly.

Cures Constipation

One hundred grams of okra already makes up 10% of the dietary fiber needed by the body every day. These seed pods helps facilitate healthy digestion, curing constipation. Okra also contains a good amount of vitamin A, which assists in boosting colon function, helping facilitate defecation.

Improves Vision

Not only does okra possess vitamin A, which is great for intensifying vision; it also boasts a good heaping of vitamin C, which helps prevent eye=-related illnesses.

Prevents Diabetes

A number of studies have found that okra is effective in stabilizing blood sugar, helping prevent the risk of developing diabetes. However, it is important to note that eating okra alone is not substantial enough to cure diabetes altogether.

Beautifies Hair

Okra is not only an edible health wonder but a beauty treat as well- it strengthens hair. To use it on the tresses, chop okra into thin pieces and boil. Allow the broth to cool then infuse a couple of drops of lemon juice. Rub the solution on the hair and leave it for at least 15 minutes, then rinse hair with water. Say hello to healthier hair- a product of the nutrients and mucilage in okra, as well as the benefits of the lemon juice.

Smoothens and Whitens Skin

Aside from the hair, okra is also a skin beauty wonder.  The vitamin K and C in okra is good for maintaining the skin's health and youth. Okra supports the growth and repair of skin tissue and accelerates collagen and pigment formation.
