In the recent study, the overall obesity rate in the United States is actually 34%, which is more than 5% higher than initially reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Worse, only one state had a lower than 30% obesity rate while two states registered 10% higher.

What does this all mean? America is getting fatter. The good news is many factors affecting obesity can be controlled by you, such as your lifestyle and diet.

In an article published in Huffington Post on Wednesday, November 19, some of the best food experts in the country provided tips on how to choose healthy when you're grocery shopping.

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics spokesperson Vandana Sheth recommends not to shop when you're hungry as this may only push you to buy with less thought or consideration. In other words, you become an impulsive shopper (especially since you may be in a hurry to get out and eat).

Most of the food specialists recommend bringing a grocery list before you start hitting the shelves. However, to be really efficient and learn to choose your food well, you need to know more about the grocery store's layout, such as where the healthy food choices are found.

When writing your shopping list, write down what you need based on how they are laid out in the shop. This works advantageously since you don't end up wandering on the other aisles where tempting but sinful offers are abundant and you speed up shopping.

Monica Reinagel of Nutrition Diva recommends adding more produce into your shopping cart, whether they are fresh or frozen. After all, the daily recommendation is at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables. If you're worried about food spoilage, you can consider their canned goods versions, according to Appetite for Health's Katherine Brooking.
