While "Castle" season 8 has yet to end, fans are already speculating the fate of season 9. Viewers are left wondering, will the upcoming season put them at the edge of their seats like how a threatened cancellation did to them in the current run?
Speculations are heavy online that "Castle" season 9 could possibly not see the light of day. However, rumors are also circulating that execs could just go with producing a spin-off or new episodes without Nathan Fillion.
Nathan and Stana Katic's contracts are up for renewal once again, and the threat of non-renewal in season 8 is still fresh to fans. Will it happen again this time around? ABC president Paul Lee spoke about the future of Castle at the Television Critics Association event.
"We'd love for Castle to keep going for years to come," he said as reported by TV Fanatic. "There are lots of good ideas for that. I don't want to give a glimpse to what those ideas might be, but I'm feeling optimistic that we've got some good ideas."
Despite being loved by so many, fans have also expressed their dismay about the show's character development and plot. At the height of season 8 being cancelled, some fans have even claimed that the show was already "past its prime."
"I was a rabid 'Castle' fan, but the past season lost me," one fan commented on an Entertainment Weekly article. "It just became another crime 'dramedy.'"
"It makes me sad because I love Nathan Fillion, but the show is really past its prime, imo, and even he can't save it. Before I get attacked, I know there are different opinions and some still love it. You're welcome to your own thoughts on it.. I just don't enjoy it any more. The spark has gone out and I'm pretty sure there'll be no reconciliation, at least on my side."
