"Voltron: Defenders of the Universe" has become the staple of Saturday morning cartoons during the 80s that nearly every kid in your block can easily recite how the robots combine.
Because of its popularity, appeal for nostalgia and massive success of "Transformers," the live action rumor mill has been going on for many, many years. Coming Soon even reported way back in 2009 that a live action adaptation is coming under Atlas Entertainment.
Unfortunately, nothing came to fruition. Fans of the beloved mecha got "Voltron Force" in 2011 and it ran for 26 episodes, according to IMDB with nothing concrete as follow-up or news for the live action adaptation.
Although we won't get any news for a big screen movie for "Voltron," Netflix has agreed to reboot the mecha series. The streaming giant will work with DreamWorks who owns the rights to the popular 80s cartoons, according to Wall Street Journal.
Additional information is coming in as the animated reboot is coming to Netflix. Nerdist revealed the official poster and logo which features everyone's favorite combined robot.
Voltron is only shown in shadow as he is covered by the night sky and he looks nearly identical to the original. The title has also changed as the reboot will now be called "Voltron: Legendary Defender."
When it comes to plot, "little is known about the series thus far, particularly about the cast and creators, but we do know that it will follow the same classic Voltron formula of uniting five teenagers in gigantic, robotic lions to protect the universe from towering evil," according to Nerdist.
The companies behind the reboot should be good news for fans of the classic 80s cartoons. DreamWorks is known for their movies such as "Shrek," "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Madagascar". Netflix will also provide a platform where animators and writers can freely express themselves through streaming services.
