A live-action "ThunderCats" movie has yet to go into production despite how a number of actors and directors, including James McAvoy, have expressed interest in it.
As reported by Moviepilot recently, the cartoon series was one of the flicks from the 80s and 90s that has yet to be made into a movie in recent years. It was mentioned that though fans have been raring to see it on the big screen, film outfits have yet to actually give it a go.
Despite the purported disinterest of some studios, there has been buzz in the past about who might turn the cartoon series into a live-action flick. In 2012, it was reported that Michael Bay will be helming the possible project but later on it turned out it was only an April Fools' Day joke.
But in 2013, rumors about the "ThunderCats" movie surged again after James McAvoy himself expressed wanting to be a part of it as told by GamesRadar. No word yet though if it was happening in 2016.
"Lion-O is a great character for any actor," he told Total Film back then. "It's kind of explored a little bit in the cartoon, but you could really go for a 12-year-old in the body of a man."
Even though he's a fan of the series, the "X-Men" actor was still unsure a live-action version of it would ever happen.
"It's not really superhero-ish, they're in a different planet, a different time possibly, and a different dimension maybe," he explained. "Anyway, I'd love to see that but it's never going to happen."
But video game art director Jerry O'Flaherty has a different opinion of 2016 "ThunderCats" movie prior to James McAvoy's opinion of it saying the series was only shelved temporarily.
"Oh, they will absolutely make a 'ThunderCats' movie," he told GameZone in 2011. "The number of fans, I mean, just from your Google search you've seen already."
"If I got asked to come back I'd love to get back in the mix with that, but there's nothing currently active as far as I know of."
