A 2016 release date has been set, but apparently, it's not for "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3.

Previous reports have pointed out the long-winding road "Tokyo Ghoul" is going through especially with the continuation of season 3. There have also been speculations that cancellation of "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 is possible, given the numerous development issues encountered along the way.

A report by MoviePilot revealed "Tokyo Ghoul" boss Gen Fukanaga revealed development details for "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3. While the clamor has gotten louder for the next installment, it seems another "Tokyo Ghoul" merchandize will make headlines before the actual arrival of season 3. "Ever since we began simulcasting the anime series last year, fans of 'Tokyo Ghoul' have been clamoring for a mobile game," revealed Fukunaga.

"With Season 2 now finished and Season 3 set for 2016, the anticipation for the game has only grown higher," added the "Tokyo Ghoul" showrunner.

While the "Tokyo Ghoul" video game development seems to be the clamor of fans, season 3 questions continue to surge online. Despite the call for release date announcement, "Tokyo Ghoul" fans aren't exactly excited to see the story continue through season 3. Thus, a petition has been put up, calling for a reboot instead.

In the petition from early reports, it seems fans are wondering if "Tokyo Ghoul" should be rebooted instead of continuing on with season 3. While there still isn't a release date for the next "Tokyo Ghoul" installment, the petition (now a non-working page) pointed out that "What happened to 'Tokyo Ghoul' is just heartbreaking."

"We have a manga that is on par with 'Death Note' when it comes to its complexity and psychological theme and it gets that sorry adaptation from Studio Pierrot. Not only did they butcher the plot, they also ruined the characters and their development," it added.

AnimeMaru stays strong on a 2016 release date, but whether "Tokyo Ghoul" returns with season 3 or a reboot remains to be confirmed.
