The Boston Celtics did not make a move at the trade deadline as they seem satisfied with what the squad has achieved this season.
Of course, it does not mean they will not execute moves in the future, but they will still make minor moves before the season ends. First on the order of business is veteran forward David Lee, as ESPN reports that he has been waived.
The Boston Celtics have waived David Lee a day after revealing they were in talks with the veteran big man on terms for a buyout to end his brief tenure with the team.
"The Celtics plan to engage in buyout talks with veteran David Lee within the next 48 hours and a buyout could soon be struck to end Lee's brief run in Boston, according to president Danny Ainge," ESPN reported.
The Boston Celtics issued their official statement as well.
"We thank David for his contributions to our organization and wish him nothing but the best in the future," president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said in a statement Friday.
According to NBA rules, David Lee can sign with any playoff team after he clears waivers and the Dallas Mavericks are the possible frontrunners as ESPN wrote that the Mavs were "optimistic" about their chances to get the former Florida Gator's services.
The Mavs have a young team that surprisingly entered the playoffs. Lee could be a better fit there than in the Celtics which roster is overflowing with forward-centers.
Lee and the Celtics are in good terms, and Celtics Blog mentions that waiving him instead of the rumored buyout was the organization's way to express their thanks.
"It was assumed that David Lee would be bought out, which would provide the Celtics some minimal financial savings," CB wrote. "However it sounds like he has simply been waived by the team. Perhaps that is partially thank-you money for being a good solider while sitting on the bench for much of the season."
