There is a very controversial statement that is being issued by the American Society for Nutrition or ASN. This statement, published inside in the June issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, states that processed foods have become an important part of the American food supply since they guarantee that everyone is getting the necessary food and nutrition security during these times. This basically means that the processed food industry is keeping the people of the nation fed, making sure that everyone has enough food to eat and that they are meeting their daily nutritional requirements. Dr. Connie Weaver of the Purdue University in Indiana says that processed food, when consumed in moderation and within a proper diet plan, can deliver a positive impact on people's health.

This controversial claim has brought to light the broad definitions of "minimally processed" and "processed" food in the country. Typically, people would be quick to classify multiple food items that undergo varying degrees of processing and have vaguely defined nutritional information as processed food. As authors of the claim, clean Dr. Weaver and her team agree that a new classification system for processed food must be initialized but, according to them, it is the nutritional classification that is important to be defined and not the extent of processing.

Because of the widely known fact that there are some processed foods that come with empty calories and excessively high sugar content, it was unsurprising that this statement garnered criticism and mixed reactions from citizens nationwide. At one point, it was pointed out that Dr. Weaver had alleged ties within the food processing industry, but she was quick to address these statements saying that this claim was purely from a professional point of view. Dr. Weaver is a distinguished professor and is the head of the Department Of Nutrition Science at Purdue University, and she says that based on her and her team's research, there are processed foods in the market and that have adequately high nutritional value and these candy used to boost the American diet. She is urging people to stop associating processed food with junk food and, instead, to focus more attention on exploring other options with nutrient-dense options that are also in the market.
