Initial reports have said that Apple Watch 2 may be one of the new devices that Apple will be unveiling in its rumored March event but a new report suggests that the highly-anticipated new smartwatch is coming only later this 2016.
"If you're holding out for the Apple Watch 2 to appear any time soon, don't hold your breath, because it might not happen until later this year. And this makes perfect sense for Apple to wait," ZDNet wrote in its report.
According to ZDNet, new devices like the iPad Air 3 and the iPhone 5SE are expected to make an appearance in the rumored Apple event this March, but Apple Watch 2 is definitely not one of them.
ZDNet further said that it "makes perfect sense" for Apple to hold back on releasing an update for Apple Watch since it does not face any pressure from the competition.
"There isn't a product in the smartwatch arena that comes close to the Apple Watch either in terms of features or sales. It doesn't make sense for Apple to be tweaking the design of the Apple Watch yearly if the device is selling reasonably well," it wrote further.
The reasons, according to the report, include Apple branding the Apple Watch as a high-end luxury item and it won't help if a high-end product gets update almost every year. Second, Apple may not want to change Apple Watch 2 too much since it still has to expand its user base, much more than it has to sell upgrades to its existing user base.
And lastly, yearly upgrade may be counterproductive for Apple since there's only so much functionality that can be crammed in an Apple Watch.
In other words, unlike the iPhone or iPad, there's not much features that can be added in a small watch so adding upgrades every year may only hasten its obsolescence.
