"Star Wars" star Mark Hamill has revealed something new about the iconic films.
George Lucas had previously revealed that the world of "Star Wars" had undergone a number of changes before being shown in theatres and becoming the pop culture icon that it is today. One of the most notable changes made was the name of Luke Skywalker as it was originally planned to be Luke Starkiller.
Mark Hamill, the actor who played the iconic protagonist, revealed that the plans for Luke Starkiller didn't end with the drawing board. He reportedly stated that he filmed some scenes using the original last name before the production decided to revise it.
“They changed it very late,” Hamill told the Cambridge Union debating society, as reported on Radio Times. “I actually filmed the scene ‘I’m Luke Starkiller and I’m here to rescue you,’ and I got a call sheet and they said they were gonna shoot that scene [again]."
“I said ‘really? What’s wrong with Luke Starkiller?’ It gives him a little moxie you know? He could use all the moxie he could get. Kind of a vapid farmboy, let’s give him a little gut here. And they said ‘oh no no no no no. They don’t like the word 'kill' in your name. It tests negatively.’"
Not only were the character's name an issue, even the title of the film itself was put into question. Mark Hamill shared that there was even a contest to see who would give a better name than "Star Wars," but no one else could come up with something better.
Hamill added that he thought he was only going to be the sidekick of Harrison Ford but later found out that he actually was the lead.
“I get the script, and I open the page and it says, ‘The Adventures of Luke Starkiller, as taken from the Journal of the Whills, Saga #1, The Star Wars,'" he said on Flickering Myth. "I went, wait a second, I don’t think Harrison’s playing Luke Starkiller, I think that’s me!”
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was released last Dec. 18, 2015 and the next film "Star Wars Episode 8" will be released on Dec. 15, 2017.
The movie franchise and its characters have become household names over the years and more about the films and the production have been revealed recently. Cut scenes, character edits and so much more have been revealed to follow the epic debut of "The Force Awakens."
