February is heart month, and not just because February 14 is Valentine's Day. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced early February that this month is dubbed as the American Heart Month, dedicated to preventing cardiovascular disease (CVD) as a leading killer, and empowering everyone to choose a heart-healthy lifestyle.

This initiative is in line with the Million Hearts program which was launched in September 2011 by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), with the goal of preventing 1 million heart attacks and strokes in the United States by the year 2017.

CVD includes hypertension (also known as high blood pressure), heart disease, and stroke. The CDC notes that CVD rates may be decreasing, but not a lot of American adults are showing signs of good cardiovascular health. In fact, an average estimate of one in three American adults has at least one type of cardiovascular disease.

In line with the American Heart Month, the American Heart Association encourages couples to enjoy Valentine's Day while staying fit, healthy, and active. The foundation published an article in its blog, blog.heart.org, listing down tips on "tackling heart health as a couple", noting the following:

Creating a Gourmet Dinner

The article emphasizes the importance of a healthy meal for Valentine's, such as Brussels sprouts and fruits. Cooking processes such as baking, roasting, and steaming are recommended.

Meditating and De-Stressing Together

Allotting time and space to meditate together can help re-shift a couple's focus on the essentials in life, adds the article. This practice is both ideal for a couple as individuals and as partners.

Trying a New Physical Activity

Valentine's dates need not be cliché, and can actually be fun and health-beneficial. Trying out new physical activities like a new sport or yoga is a great way to bond together while staying in tip top shape.
