Dr. Kent Brantly, the first American evacuated back to the United States after being infected with the Ebola virus while tending to the sick in West Africa, has donated blood anew to NBC News cameraman Ashoka Mukpo who contracted the virus while covering events of the crisis with the rest of his news team in Africa.

Mukpo's family told the News outfit that officials from the Nebraska Medical Center had gotten in touch with Dr. Brantly and asked him if he could give plasma for the journalist's treatment. Doctors at the facility are hopeful that Dr. Brantly's antibodies will fire up Mukpo's immune system. During the time of the call, Dr. Brantly was on the road traveling from Indiana to Texas.  When officials informed him that his blood type was a match to Mukpo's he stopped within minutes at Community Blood Center in Kansas City, Missouri to have his blood drawn. His donation was then flown to Omaha.

Currently, Dr. Brantly is continuing his work with Samaritan's Purse, the same Christian Mission organization that he was working with when he was in the front lines in West Africa. It was here that he became exposed to the virus and subsequently developed the infection, becoming the first American to have Ebola virus during the current outbreak. The doctor had to wait in Liberia for nine days during his illness before arrangements were finalized and he was flown back to the United States. He received treatment at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.

Previously, he also donated blood to fellow American aid worker Dr. Richard Sacra who also contracted the virus while tending to obstetric patients in the region. Dr. Sacra has already recovered from Ebola. Meanwhile, Mukpo's father was moved by Dr. Brantly's gesture. "This act of kindness and generosity makes me believe in the goodness of humanity," he said.
