Last month, Nintendo and DeNA announced their partnership to create new smartphone game apps for titles such as "Super Mario," "Donkey Kong" and "Pokémon."

Nintendo aims to extend their reach to users who prefer to use their mobile phone rather than buy a 3DS.

"In order to create completely new game experiences for smart devices, all Nintendo IP will be eligible for development and exploration by the alliance. As these consumers enjoy the unique kind of gameplay found only with Nintendo, they will have the opportunity to explore even more premium experiences on Nintendo's dedicated video game platforms," Nintendo stated in their press release.

The partnership will give DeNA a 1.24 percent ownership stake in Nintendo while the latter will get a 10 percent ownership stake in the mobile game company. Iconic Nintendo characters such as Mario and Donkey Kong will soon be playable in Android and iOS devices. The companies will be developing new apps which are optimized for smartphone gaming

"We want to create games that will be played by hundreds of millions of people. We want to create multiple hit games rather than aiming to succeed with just one powerful IP element. We haven't talked to Nintendo about targets, but at DeNA, our best-selling game brought in 3 billion yen a month, and we want to surpass that," DeNA Chief Executive Isao Moriyasu told Reuters.

DeNA is expecting more than 3 billion yen worth of profit per month, which is equivalent to about $25.02 million, from their partnership with Nintendo. Their most popular game, Kaito Royale, brought profits of around the same range and DeNA wants to surpass that record.

The company will be helping Nintendo take back their rightful place at the top of the gaming industry after failing to shift to the more popular platform of gaming apps.
