Authorities in the Dominican Republic have closed and shut down a plastic surgery clinic following the death of an American woman who traveled to the country to undergo a liposuction procedure, officials revealed on Sunday.
The clinic, which was owned by Dr. Edgar Contreras, has been in hot water for the past couple of years due complaints filed against his clinic. The U.S. woman is the fourth woman and the second American who has died this year at Dominican plastic surgery clinics, Yahoo News reports.
The Caribbean, Dominican republic, Thailand, Mexico and Costa Rica has been promoting medical tourism in their countries due to their procedures which are cheaper and visitors can relax in their resorts before their scheduled cosmetic surgeries.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a public warning against having plastic surgeries in the Dominican Republic. According to the report, many U.S. citizens went to Dominican Republic for surgery and have had complications. Some of them have died from these complications, Loudoun Center reports.
Last year, a 28-year old woman from New York travelled to the Dominican Republic for cheaper plastic surgery. Unfortunately, she succumbed to massive pulmonary embolism during the procedure which killed her during a tummy tuck and liposuction procedure, New York Post reports.
