Contract Packaging Resources, a drug repacking company, is recalling 11,640 boxes of Assured brand Naproxen Sodium. The Food and Drug Administration announced the recall of the medicines because some boxes actually contain bottles of Ibuprofen, another type of pain reliever.
Consumers were informed that they might mistakenly buy the box of Naproxen Sodium but contains Ibuprofen 200mg soft gels instead. Ibuprofen was reported to cause many allergic reactions to some people. They might be actually avoiding Ibuprofen due to an allergic reaction or medical condition and due to this error, they might be at risk for anaphylactic attack which can be fatal.
The boxes are labeled, Assured brand Naproxen Sodium Tablets 220mg, 15 count (Lot #FH4102A) [SKU #122368/UPC #639277223685], which contains Ibuprofen soft gels. They were distributed in the United States especially to Dollar Tree. They distributed the medicine to consumers through stores and the internet.
The company, Contract Packaging Resources, is notifying consumers as well as distributors of this error. They are coordinating with Doll Tree to properly notify their costumers of what the box actually contains.
According to statistics, there are many reported cases of drug allergies worldwide. Ibuprofen causes allergic reactions to some people. Some may cause fatal side effects. Common adverse effects include hives, facial swelling, skin reddening, rash, blisters and worse, shock and asthma, which can be fatal.
FDA is firm and strict in instances when packaging errors happen. They do not want to put the consumer's safety at risk for serious health problems. Drug companies as well as their partner packaging firms should apply firm and strict standards in making sure that high quality and right medicines are purchased by their valued customers. Errors such as these should not be tolerated.
Today, they are recalling all boxes, especially those already purchased by consumers. There are no reported allergic reactions yet.
