In Liberia, the government had already lifted their quarantine programs after having implemented them to contain the highly lethal Ebola virus and prevent it's spread outside of their borders. Initially, the quarantine measures had sparked protests as security had been heightened to prevent the movement of the virus across borders. As the announcement of the upliftment of the quarantine spread throughout the country, people took to the streets and chanted "we are free."
Meanwhile, the Ebola virus has reportedly already made its way into Senegal, which has recorded it's the first Ebola case on Friday, August 29. Government and health officials believe that the virus came into the country through a Guinean student who was able to evade surveillance and quarantine measures in Guinea. This student is, reportedly, part of a family that has been positively identified as victims of the Ebola virus. All the members of the family that have been infected with the disease have now died because of the infection. There is now an escalating fear among Senegal residents that that student could have already spread the infection to other people in the country during his three-week stay in the country's capital, Dakar.
Because of this unfortunate incident Senegal has immediately put strict preventive measures in place, closing down its borders with Guinea and restricting flights to all other countries affected by the Ebola virus outbreak. The implementation of travel restrictions those against recommendations by the world health organization stating that there is no need for such methods as this has already resulted to the unnecessary loss of lives as health workers are being prevented from traveling to Ebola-stricken regions. Life-saving health equipment that could potentially be used against the virus is also not being delivered to these places because of the imposition of the travel bans.
