The battle for the next web slinger has been going on for months now and it seems like casting updates have narrowed down to two equally talented actors to portray Peter Parker in the upcoming "Spider-Man" reboot. Will the role fall on Asa Butterfield or Tom Holland? Will a director finally be chosen soon?

Latest news reveals that after months have passed, finally the role of Peter Parker in the upcoming "Spider-Man" reboot has been narrowed down to two young actors. Asa Butterfield and Tom Holland are reported to be the top two contenders in the battle to become the newest Peter Parker.

According to a report by Deadline, "It's down to the wire, both on the choice of the actor who'll play Peter Parker --- Asa Butterfield and Tom Holland are the frontrunners though Matt Lintz and Charlie Rowe also made strong impressions --- and also on the filmmaker who'll steer a multi-picture arc that takes the protagonist through high school."

Asa Butterfield is known for his work in the 2008 Holocaust film "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" and has appeared in the science fiction film "Ender's Game" in 2013 as the titular character. The 18-year-old is currently working on the film adaptation of "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" set for a 2016 release date.

Tom Holland, on the other hand, has also made a name for himself after appearing in the 2012 film "The Impossible." The 19-year-old actor has also portrayed the titular role in "Billy Elliot the Musical."

Meanwhile, apart from casting updates for the "Spider-Man" reboot, choice of director is also hot topic for this upcoming 2017 film. According to IGN, top contenders to direct "Spider-Man" reboot includes 2014 film "St. Vincent" director Ted Melfi and Jonathan Levine who is known for his work in "Warm Bodies" in  2013.

This untitled "Spider-Man" reboot is slated for a July 28, 2017 release date.
