Forbes writer Jacquelyn Smith writes that the first few hours of the work day affects an employee's productivity level in a significant way. This shows the importance of having a morning routine that sets the work day right.

According to workplace expert and author Lynn Taylor, a good start that gives you greater control of your day is vital in achieving better results and greater career success. "How you begin your morning sets the tone and your attitude for the day. It can derail or direct your focus," she says.

Smith compiles the following habits that are backed up by expert advice and research.

Be on time for work. Being late not only gives off a bad impression but also throws off the entire day. Arriving on time or even a little early establishes your mindset for the day, promoting an instant feeling of accomplishment, says Taylor.

Eat a substantial breakfast. Most people skip this part, or at least rush through it- think New York City style bagels and coffee while dashing to the subway. This is unhealthy, both physically and productively. Career expert Michael Kerr adds, "Breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day to help us down the path of not only being more physically fit, but also to have the mental energy needed to tackle your work day."

Organize. Kerr also believes that the first hour at work is best spent assessing your priorities and what you need to accomplish for that day. Being easily distracted with the load of emails and other tasks can be overwhelming and can take a toll on your productivity. Writing a to-do list is a classic but effective method to keep your priorities in order.

Talk with colleagues. A short 5 minute huddle can boost not only productivity but team work, says Kerr. Have everyone share their top objective for the day as well as any critical information everyone needs to know. This encourages the feeling that no one is alone in their tasks and that ultimately, you are all part of a moving team.
