The culinary herb is great for treating cancer as well as for cardiovascular health.

What is basil exactly? It is a highly fragrant plant whose leaves are used as a seasoning herb for many different types of foods. It is native to India, where it is considered as holy herb or holy plant. Scientifically known as Ocimum basilicum, basil provides many health benefits mainly because of its phytonutrients compounds, according to healthbuzz.com.

It is known for its healing power- a very good herb for skin, hair, bone, immune system and digestive tracts. This herb also gives protection against unwanted bacterial growth and used in antibiotic drugs. But one of the major health benefits of Basil is its ability to promote cardiovascular health.

Nutritional profile

Basil is an excellent source of vitamin K and manganese; a very good source of copper, vitamin A (in the form of carotenoids such as beta-carotene), and vitamin C; and a good source of calcium, iron, folate, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids. In addition to the nutrients, basil contains carbohydrates, sugar, soluble and insoluble fiber, sodium, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids and more.

Basil for Cardiovascular Health

Basil is rich in carotenoids such as beta-carotene, which can be converted into vitamin A. Beta-carotene is an even more potent antioxidant than regular vitamin A, as it not only protects cells from free radical damage, but also aids in keeping free radicals from oxidizing cholesterol in the bloodstream. By not oxidizing, cholesterol does not build up on blood vessel walls, avoiding atherosclerosis and a heart attack, according to healthdiaries.com.

Cryptoxanthin, lutein and zeaxanthin in basil are excellent antioxidants and they protect cells from free radical damage. Caffeic acid found in this herb is a strong antioxidant and helps in reducing oxidative stress as well.  Free radical damage is a contributing factor in many other conditions as well, including asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. The beta-carotene found in basil may help to lessen the progression of these conditions while protecting cells from further damage.

Potassium provides important cardiovascular health benefits as well. It is needed for proper heart function. Potassium reduces the chance of developing Atherosclerosis and responsible for reducing high blood pressure levels.

Basil is also a good source of magnesium, which promotes cardiovascular health by relaxing muscles and blood vessels, improving blood flow and lowering the risk of irregular heart rhythms and cardiovascular spasms

Manganese is a trace mineral which is a powerful antioxidant. It fights against free radicals, helps maintain good blood pressure levels and also keeps good cholesterol levels.

Basil is an excellent food for cardiovascular health. Vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients in it provide excellent cardiovascular health benefits. Basil's flavonoids and volatile oils can provide important and unique health benefits.
