“Gambit” took some time before it was finally given the green light by the studio. Finally, fans of the socially challenged Marvel mutant Remy LeBeau or Gambit have a spinoff movie to look forward to in the near future.
“Magic Mike XXL” actor Channing Tatum and Lauren Shuler Donner were delighted to know that they can finally move forward with a solo feature for the Ragin’ Cajun with writer Joshua Zetumer of “RoboCop” and director Rupert Wayatt of “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.”
“We finally found someone that I really do believe wants to make Gambit,” Tatum wrote on his Reddit AMA. “It will be the second standalone character. I just really think, because Gambit is not the most popular or the biggest hero, there is a really unique opportunity.”
Tatum was also glad about being able to land Zetumer for “Gambit,” according to what he said in the May issue of Empire, according to Comic Book Movie. “Josh Zetumer jus turned in the first draft of the script,” Tatum said. “It is killer!”
Tatum even mentioned Marvel’s tendency to dabble in potentially highly lucrative movie deals. “Marvel has done a lot of great movies that have made a ridiculous amount of money,” he added. “It is always good to figure how to change the form.” Clearly, Tatum is excited with making a movie that he believes has something different to offer to the Marvel table.
Considering that the film will come after Bryan Singer’s “X-Men: Apocalypse,” fans of the MCU, or Marvel Cinematic Universe, have started to speculate precisely when Gambit will be introduced into the storyline. Sadly for those who have been wishing that the card-throwing mutant make a cameo appearance in “X-Men: Apocalypse,” Tatum, himself, had confirmed that it is not going to happen.
“No, Ma’am or Sir,” Tatum answered a fan’s question regarding the special cameo. “I definitely will not.”
Introducing Gambit through “X-Men: Apocalypse” would actually help the audience be familiar with the Cajun anti-hero. After all, it must be noted that there was a time in Gambit’s life that he had served as Apocalypse by being one of the horsemen.
Plus, making a cameo in “X-Men: Apocalypse” will also serve as a marketing strategy to amp up the hype with regards to Tatum’s upcoming solo movie.
