September is designated as National Food Safety Month. Several training events and programs will be held through the celebration pose to help in improving the status of safety and handling in the food industry.
National Food Safety Month was created in 1994 by the National Restaurant Association to improve the awareness about the significance of food safety education. This year's theme which includes free training activities will be held by the association to reinforce proper food safety practices and procedures.
On top of this, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and Con Agra Agency teamed up to promote useful information for busy families to use.
In a study done by International Food Information Council Foundation (IFIC), government agencies and health officials are the most trusted source for food safety information.
In addition to this, the 2014 IFIC Foundation Food and Health Survey, confirms that people are aware of many food safety information. The survey also revealed that a room for improvement is needed to cease the consumer confusion on certain food safety issues.
Food safety is consumer's best defense against food poisoning and other microbial sickness.
Five aspects of safe food handling were tackled on Food Safety Code, that was geared towards food establishments.
In Guam, over 48 Million food borne illness cases are recorded each year and the source is improper food handling.
Public Health director James Gillan said "this annual event where we get the community involved in learning about food safety, we get our young people doing some great things." He further added that by next month they will hold an exhibit involving school children.
According to Environmental public officer Evan Lom on KUAM News, "you want to have your managers to have a certain knowledge of food safety another focus is on handling safety on reducing hand contact with foods you want to learn when to exclude and restrict employees if they are exhibiting symptoms like that."
Currently, the Food Safety Fair will demonstrate proper food handling in public on September 20 at Micronesia Mall from 10am to 2pm.
