"Pacific Rim 2" full movie may be on the way to cancellation after it has been removed from Universal's release schedule.
IGN reported that "Pacific Rim 2" full movie has not been cancelled yet but Universal Pictures has confirmed that the film has been put on "indefinite hold." It will not be opening in 2017 as previously announced as well.
It was said that the delay is for the "creative team [to] continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film." No further details were disclosed.
Director Guillermo del Toro also clarified that the film is still going to push through. "It's not cancelled," he told IGN. "I'm gonna do a little movie in between, if [the studio] deem[s] to approve it."
"But in the meantime we're turning in a budget and a script in three weeks [on 'Pacific Rim 2]. So it's still active. I still have my producer working on the budget and I still have the writer working on the script."
It was previously reported that the production for "Pacific Rim 2" full movie has been "halted indefinitely" and was pushed back in favor of other titles by the studio. It is highly likely that the sequel will be released by 2018 or later.
The production for the film would have started this November at Pinewood Toronto Studios and would have carried on until next year. "We have an epic battle at the end [that] we started designing a couple weeks ago," del Toro said about the sequel's massive ending.
At San Diego Comic-Con, del Toro revealed that "Pacific Rim 2" full movie is set a few years after the events of the original film and will focus on the Kaiju monsters. It is said to be entitled, "Maelstrom."
There were rumors that Charlie Day's Kaiju-obsessed Dr. Newton Geiszler and Burn Gorman's Gottlieb might return. However, it is unclear whether Jaeger pilots Charlie Hunnam's Raleigh Beckett and Rinko Kikuchi's Mako Mori will reprise their roles.
