For many decades, scientists and doctors are left baffled on how to effectively deal with cancer. They seem to be so similar yet vastly different that there's no definite and all-around cure to it. It also doesn't help that until now no one has properly pinpointed the actual reason why cancer develops in the first place.
In the end, every year, thousands of people die from a variety of cancers, in spite of the supposed marked improvements in treatment.
But there's one scientist who has been working real hard to find the best cure, and he may already be on his way to achieving that.
Dr. Siyaram Pandey of University of Windsor has discovered that the extract of the long pepper fruit can work against cancer by compelling the cells to attack and kill themselves.
The idea that this fruit may be able to treat cancer has been around for many years only to be completely forgotten. However, he landed on a previous research that suggests one of its compounds is a very potent cancer killer and chose to exploit it with the help of his team. This time, he wanted to test not just the single compound but the entire extract.
The extract, which is first converted into a powder, is shown to stimulate cellular apoptosis or death. In other words, the cells themselves commit suicide. This finding is remarkable since conventional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy also damage the healthy cells in the process, leaving the patient with compromised immunity.
Nevertheless, the team still has to perform a clinical trial and thus requires funding. Meanwhile, his initial research on the fruit extract has been locally funded so far, including a family where one of the members died of myeloid leukemia.
Dr. Pandey is also famous for his anti-cancer therapy using dandelion root extract.
